Microsoft Copilot is an AI answer surface embedded across Microsoft 365, Windows, Edge and Bing — grounded in both the Bing web index and enterprise data. For B2B vendors it is a decision-stage, largely unobservable citation surface: answers appear inside the tools where buyers actually work, with no public results page to audit.

Microsoft Copilot is a family of AI assistant experiences inside Microsoft's stack — most consequentially Microsoft 365 (Word, Outlook, Teams, Excel), plus Windows, Edge and Bing. In the enterprise SKU (Microsoft 365 Copilot, licensed per seat) it first queries Microsoft Graph for relevant organisational content, then optionally augments answers with Bing web results when current external information improves the response1. Operational use

Because Copilot web grounding routes through Bing, ensure your key pages are well indexed in Bing and written citation-ready: direct claims, named sources, structured FAQs, complete entity–attribute–value statements. Audit presence by running representative buyer prompts in Copilot directly, and track citation signals where a web grounding footprint exists.

Measurement boundary

External measurement is structurally limited. Work-mode answers inside M365 leave no public results page and no server-side log for the cited brand, and no click unless the user opens a reference. Only web-grounded answers leave a Bing-visible footprint; answers drawn purely from enterprise Graph data are invisible from outside, and no rank-tracker equivalent exists for this surface.

From Google's AI surfaces: those intercept the query at the search page in a browser; Copilot answers appear inside productivity apps during active work — a different trigger and funnel stage. From platform divergence: Copilot is one reason identical investments yield different outcomes per engine — its Bing-centric retrieval, enterprise-Graph layer and admin-governed web access give it distinct logic. From grounding: that is the mechanism; Copilot is a surface that grounds in two layers in sequence (Graph first, Bing web second).

Common mistakes

  • Treating Copilot as just Bing SEO: Bing indexing is necessary but not sufficient — Copilot adds a retrieval/synthesis layer, and admins can disable web grounding entirely.
  • Assuming all Copilot answers are observable: only web-grounded ones leave a trackable footprint; Graph-grounded answers are invisible to the cited vendor.
  • Conflating enterprise Microsoft 365 Copilot with consumer Copilot in Bing/Windows — different grounding depth, controls and decision context.
  • Optimising only for discovery-stage awareness, when Copilot's highest-value use is late-funnel, inside the RFP/briefing workflow.
