Common mistakes

  • Optimising only for AI Overviews and assuming AI Mode behaves the same — the retrieval logic and citation pathway differ.
  • Believing a top-10 organic rank guarantees a citation; passage retrievability, not position, decides.
  • Reporting AI Mode performance from Search Console clicks/impressions alone — the surface is not attributed there.
  • Equating "cited in AI Mode" with "ranked #1": citation is a probabilistic, passage-level event, and several competitors can be co-cited in one answer.
